A Climate for Change
The UK's economy is experiencing a roller-coaster ride as the financial crisis that is looming world wide gains momentum. The telegraph* recently reported that "the British economy has lurched to a new low as £51 billion was wiped off the value of the country's top companies."
This bleak outlook is further confirmed by experts warning that Britain is heading for its worst financial crisis in decades. Legendary invester George Soros was quoted saying in moneyweek, "the worst financial storm in 60 years".
A report in financemarkets.co.uk stated that many organisations are saying that they are "set to reduce their workforce by an average of 1.1% which represents 350,000 jobs across the UK". At times like these, companies usually turn to reducing head counts or freezing their recruitment process. This method is seen by many employers as the best 'lifeboat' to prevent the current economic climate spreading and to find a quick way of cutting costs. But is it? The real waste still exists.
Leaders in organisations now have a choice. They can either take a 'gloom and doom' approach and hope for the best or take this as an opportunity to move forward by changing their business practices away from traditional methods (Command & Control) to a method that is far superior, known as 'Systems Thinking'. This method is a proven method that can produce phenomenal results.
Great leaders who have embraced systems thinking are reaping the benefits. Due to this change, their organisations are producing results that not only see productivity rocketing but also staff morale improving and costs plunging. Best of all, these results are sustainable. The results they get are a consequence of a change in their thinking and a change in the way they manage their business.
